Begin the afternoon with a slow, mindful yoga session with Mirabai. She will offer a therapeutic sequence practiced on our backs to open the hips, legs, and spine, and guide us through breath techniques to awaken the energy body. This class is beginner friendly and for all levels and ages. Those who wish to attend the workshop but are not able to practice yoga are welcome to lie in a supported savasana for this portion of class. We appreciate your presence for the entire workshop, to help hold the sacred space.
After this gentle yoga session to relax the body and focus the mind, Uma will teach us to chant the full Sanskrit prayer that contains the familiar line, “Lokah samasthah sukhino bhavantu” (May all beings being happy). We’ll learn the history and meaning of this beautiful prayer for global well-being, known as Lokakshema or Mangala Mantra, and why and how it is typically chanted in ashrams.
Far more than a mere prayer for well-being, this mantra offers keys to understanding the meaning and profound value of Dharma. Living your life in the fluid balance of Dharma can bring peace and grounding into your own being, and like the butterfly’s flapping wings, contribute a positive influence toward bringing balance and peace to the entire planet.
We’ll learn to chant the four-line verse, taking an expanded look into the meaning of each line. We’ll learn some basic and sometimes surprising things about vedic chanting, such as why we chant “shanti” three times at the end of vedic prayers. Finally, we’ll chant the mantra, flowing into kirtan of the well-known last line. We’ll end the afternoon with a meditation to integrate the experience.
